Window security

Almost one third of all burglaries in the UK happen by intruders gaining access through a window.

Making your windows more secure is simple yet effective. The fitting of window security may be a requirement of your house insurance. dhf members supply a wide range of window locks, lock and security fittings.

Window locks and fittings are available for virtually every type of window:

• Casement (where the window is hinged vertically and opens like a door)
• Sash (traditional window that slides open vertically)
• Tilt and turn
• Horizontal opening (typically the opening skylight on a double-glazed window)

Window locks and security fittings are available for windows that are made from any material, including:

• Timber
• PVCu
• Steel
• Aluminium

A wide range of window locks and fittings ensures there is a product that meets every homeowner's individual needs. A basic window lock complete with keys is easy for the average DIYer to fit on timber and PVCu window frames. These are readily available from locksmiths, your local hardware store or multiple DIY retailers who all sell locks and associated hardware. 

Other types of window lock provide higher levels of security. These include:

• Handle/rotating metal rod combination for casement windows (called "espagnolette" in the trade).
• Shotbolt lock with deadlock giving security on three edges of the window (sometimes known as a multipoint window lock).
• Window restrictor cable (prevents the window from opening too wide to both deter access by intruders and serve as a safety feature by preventing someone falling through a high window that is open wide).
