UK’S FIRST DOOR ENGINEERS ACHIEVE NVQ STATUS

Article first published 03/08/2005

The UK’s first two door engineers to successfully achieve National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) status have been congratulated by the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF).

Philip Harrison and Steve Reeves, who both work at Crawford Hafa Ltd’s Stoke operation, completed a five month process of work evaluation which culminated in their NVQ achievement.

The setting up of the new NVQ followed years of campaigning and hard work by the DHF. The scheme was finally established by the DHF in partnership with the CITB and City & Guilds. The Level 2 NVQ for door systems engineers is based upon on-the-job assessment of candidates’ practical skills and knowledge.

Door installers and repairers around the country are currently working towards NVQ status in order to obtain their blue “skilled” CSCS card which is accepted by the Main Contractors’ Group as their passport into construction sites.

Said Ian Wood, DHF chief executive officer: “It was vital to get this first industry-wide training scheme into place, as it can only increase standards of quality and safety. For some time we have been providing our members with detailed guidelines on how they can ensure their employees gain NVQ qualifications. We congratulate Philip and Steve on their success in becoming the first to achieve NVQ status.”

Their assessor at Crawford, training manager Dave Hall, said: “I see the NVQ programme as complementary to the product training being carried out at Crawford, and I am pleased to have become one of the first door industry assessors in the UK. The door industry has many skilled engineers, but this has previously not been recognised formally. It is the intention of Crawford to ensure all of our engineers go through this process as quickly as possible. Customers of DHF members that have NVQ qualified engineers can be confident that they will receive a professional service."

The DHF’s detailed guidelines on NVQ accreditation are available only to DHF members. For more information about membership of the DHF, contact the DHF Secretariat, 42 Heath Street, Tamworth, Staffs B79 7JH. Phone: 01827 52337. Fax: 01827 310827. Email: info@dhfonline.org.uk
